According to UNESCO estimates, 130 million girls between the age of 6 and 17 are out of school. The UNICEF’s statistics on education in Nigeria indicates that even though basic education is officially free and compulsory, about 10.5 million of the country’s children aged 6-17 years are not in school. About 60% of out-of-school children are girls. Barriers to girl’s education are caused by poverty, cultural norms and practices, poor infrastructure, violence, and fragility.
