In celebration of the 2024 International Day of the Girl, AfriWomen for Entrepreneurship Initiative is proud to announce a month-long series of events across selected secondary schools in Ibadan. This year’s global theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” highlights the urgent need to empower girls amidst the challenges of climate change, poverty, and gender inequality, while fostering hope for a brighter, inclusive future led by the voices and visions of young girls.
AfriWomen stands in solidarity with girls who continue to demonstrate resilience, courage, and optimism in the face of adversity. This year’s celebration focuses on amplifying their voices and equipping them with the tools to create a better tomorrow.
Our Celebration Highlights Include:
1. School Workshops: Empowering Girls’ Voices
AfriWomen will host workshops on leadership, innovation, and future-readiness, encouraging girls to express their vision for a future where they are respected, empowered, and free to pursue their dreams. These sessions will also provide mentorship and opportunities for skill-building in entrepreneurship, health, and technology.
2. Community Dialogue on Girls’ Rights
Through interactive discussions, we will engage students, teachers, and community members in conversations about the importance of protecting girls’ rights. Special attention will be given to eliminating harmful practices such as child marriage and promoting gender equality in education.
3. Adult Literacy Programs for Grassroots Women
In recognition that adult women play a crucial role in supporting young girls, AfriWomen will extend its focus to include adult literacy programs for women in local communities. This initiative will empower grassroots women with the knowledge and skills to be stronger advocates for girls’ rights.
4. Showcase of Girls’ Leadership Projects
Schools will be invited to participate in a project showcase, where girls will present creative solutions addressing global challenges, from climate change to social justice. This will provide them with a platform to be heard and seen as leaders in their communities.
Why This Matters
Girls today face numerous challenges, from the effects of global crises to setbacks in gender equality. Yet, as recent reports highlight, girls are not just victims of these crises—they are powerful agents of change. AfriWomen believes in the limitless potential of girls when they are supported, listened to, and given opportunities to thrive. By investing in girls, we strengthen not only their futures but also the fabric of our communities, economies, and society as a whole.
AfriWomen’s Commitment to Girls’ Futures
As an organization deeply rooted in the empowerment of women and girls, AfriWomen is dedicated to providing sustainable programs that equip girls with health, nutrition, learning opportunities, and protection from harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM). We believe that when girls are given the tools to lead, the impact is both immediate and far-reaching.
AfriWomen calls on all community leaders, educators, and advocates to join us in supporting girls’ leadership, agency, and vision for a better future. Together, we can create a world where every girl is protected, respected, and empowered to fulfill her potential.
