The AfriWomen visited the Oba of Olorunda, Kabiyesi Samuel OludeleAbiodun Folarin (JP) and his wife today to discuss their partnership to empower women in the olorunda community of Lagelu LGA of Ibadan.
The CEO, Mrs. Oso, started by appreciating them for the opportunity given to the organization to open a new center in their community.
Mrs Oso, while sharing the history of the AfriWomen stated that her mother was a widow at 40 years and this spurred her to start the Widows’ Light House but she wasn’t fulfilled because there was no robust mission or vision. She was then moved to focus on the social and economic development of women particularly the Grassroot women. Her redirection birthed the idea of adult literacy and the organization “AFRIWOMEN”.
The Olori stated that she also loves women, and she is always on the look out for sustainable programs like those of the AfriWomen for the women in her community.
Mrs. Oso further stated that, the sustainable programs offered by the AfriWomen empowered over 397 women in 2021. The programs included literacy and numeracy skills, computer literacy, vocational skills acquisition training that foster financial independence. Examples of such skills are cosmetology and gele tying, photography, fashion designing.
Oso also pointed out that other benefit of AfriWomen programmes include access to the cooperative society, functional literacy of opening and operating a bank account, access to responsible financial opportunities to start, sustain or accelerate businesses, registration of identity and well-being programs.
The Kabiyesi and his wife appreciated the organization, prayed for the organization, and assured them that they would relay all that had been discussed to the women in her community. They further established their partnership by offering the organisation a hall in the palace for the literacy center.
The school will be run for a maximum of 9 months, 6 hours a week as instructed by the Oyo State Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education AANFE for women from ages 15 and upwards.
